Seeing Light Through Technology and Art

Turrell's Catso, Red
As national, state, and local evidence points to the benefits of integrated learning opportunities, educators increasingly look for ways to create these experiences for their students. The Mattress Factory museum (MF) is proud to offer this two-day teacher workshop on November 14, 2009 and January 23, 2010. Designed for art, science, and classroom elementary teachers, particularly grades 1-3, this professional development opportunity will look to answer the questions:
How can I use the idea of technology as a teaching tool?; How can I incorporate it with art making and inquiry experiences?; and What is the value of introducing the study of light to elementary students?

This experience will provide educators with the opportunity to engage in an in-depth exploration of installation art using the museum’s permanent collection, particularly the work of James Turrell. Further, participants will study the relationship between light, technology, and art, and will ultimately develop a plan for translating their hands-on experiences into learning opportunities for the classroom.

The Mattress Factory’s position as a museum of contemporary art created on site by artists from across the world makes it a unique resource for the community. Located on Pittsburgh’s historic North Side, since 1977 the museum has supported over 300 artists through their residency program, affording them the opportunity to experiment, take risks, and explore the creative process. School and Teacher Programs at the museum are designed in the same vein, capitalizing on the inherent interdisciplinary and participatory nature of installation art.
