Shakespeare Monologue and Scene Contest Preliminary Rounds -

This popular annual event is open to students in grades 4-12. Students may enter the monologue contest, scene contest, or both. Students compete in the upper division (grades 8-12) or lower division (grades 4-7). Contestants present their pieces on The Public's main stage in front of a panel of judges. Those who advance to the final round of the contest have the opportunity to perform at the Showcase of Finalists. All participants receive a contest t-shirt and a voucher for two complimentary tickets to a Public Theater production. Kurt Weiser Artist Talk about Material and Process in Narrative Ceramic Objects - 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Presented By:
Manchester Craftsmen's Guild

Kurt Weiser, Regents Professor of Art at Arizona State University, is best known for slip cast teapot forms adorned with complex and richly-painted, naturalistic imagery. Hear Weiser discuss the construction, drawing, painting, and firing techniques he employs to create objects that reflect his struggle to express the beautiful nature of materials and negotiate meaning and expression from the process of creation in ceramics. This event is made possible through a partnership with the Society for Contemporary Craft, which will be exhibiting Eden Revisited, a retrospective of Weiser’s work. View Full Details

Light Up Your Lessons! Using Puppets to Enhance Literacy - 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

With Julie Brinckloes book, Fireflies!, as a focus, the artist will introduce a variety of music, movement, and dramatic play activities that will help children learn about fireflies. The story will be presented as coffee-can theater and follow-up activities will include inventing blinking patterns and using them for a call and response activity. Participants will be able to facilitate a firefly dances to the tune of Shine Little Glow Worm and support turn and talk conversations with children using firefly finger-puppets. View Full Details

MOVE-ABILITY: Nurturing body, brain and spirit - 10:30 am - 12:30 pm

This interactive workshop will demonstrate how incorporating developmentally appropriate locomotor and axial (non-locomotor) movement experiences can build upon individual abilities and learning styles and support children with special needs. Based upon The BrainDance, developed by Anne Green Gilbert, participants will learn how to apply the eight movement patterns of early human development to jump-start the body and the brain.
