The Institute for Critical Thinking and Creativity - 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

This institute will help classroom teachers from all subject areas turn theory into practice as they learn how to use the design-based approach to teaching and learning to help students think critically and express creativity. Participants will develop strategies to take back to their own classroom that will help young people to develop their abilities to solve problems, design and create, analyze a new situation and react appropriately, and make their own informed decisions. Through hands-on activities, selected readings, group discussions, and short lessons, participants will learn how to prepare students to be independent, creative thinkers. Expert guest speakers/instructors will explore topics such as Defining the importance of critical thinking and creativity Developing and supporting critical thinking and creativity through curriculum, instruction, and assessments Creating support and encouragement for critical thinking and creativity in the physical and cultural environments Identifying and building necessary skills and knowledge Exploring the role of the brain. Participants will also be expected to apply what they learn from this institute in their own classroom. This program will be considered worth 3 graduate credits from the graduate program in the Department of Industry and Technology. Therefore, participants will have pre-institute reading expectations as well as post-institute implementation activities that will be considered part of what they must do for a grade. Every month Jamie Kasper, Fine Arts and Humanities Advisor – Division of Standards and Curriculum of the Pennsylvania Department of Education, hosts Arts Chat. Arts Chat is a webinar series that features updates on arts education and information about classroom practice from teachers in the field. On Wednesday, July 21 at 4 pm, the Arts Education Collaborative will present an overview around the newly published AEC Music and Visual Arts Frameworks. These documents were developed in direct response to the needs expressed by areas arts educators. Making use of age-appropriate concepts and scaffolding content, the Frameworks channel the teaching of the Pennsylvania Academic Standards for the Arts and Humanities in music and visual art through recommended process and content indicators. The goal of this session is to provide an opportunity to reach deeper into the content and meaning of work presented by Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble through direct discussion with the creators and performers. The Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble (PNME) is one of the nation's oldest professional ensembles devoted to the music of our time. PNME's summer festival presents new music in a way you won't encounter anywhere else. AEC's 2010 Leadership Academy -

Recognized as a model for professional development by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, AEC’s Leadership Academy is a yearlong opportunity for arts educators throughout southwestern Pennsylvania. Participants attend an interactive five-day workshop over the summer and create an action plan that focuses on an identified school, district, or organizational need. Over the course of the year, they work with a network of experienced educators to identify professional goals and turn action plans into reality. Four seminars over the course of the 2010 - 2011 school year add to the depth of the entire experience.
