AEC Music and Visual Arts Frameworks Workshop - 8:00am - 3:00pm

In direct response to needs expressed by area arts educators, the Arts Education Collaborative is pleased to present a professional development opportunity around the newly published AEC Music and Visual Arts Frameworks. Making use of age-appropriate concepts and scaffolding content, the Frameworks channel the teaching of the Pennsylvania Academic Standards for the Arts and Humanities in music and visual art through recommended process and content indicators. This day long workshop will address the questions: How is a framework different from a curriculum? How are best practices in education embedded in the frameworks? How can the framework be used in guiding curriculum development? How can the framework be used as a tool to design professional development? Cost to attend is $150, which includes the cost of the document for your discipline, continental breakfast, and lunch. 6 hours of ACT 48 credit are available. Morning (9:00 to 11:30 AM) The Warhol Museum Through gallery talks and activities, participants will compare and contrast the formal aspects of Warholʼs portraits (e.g., his use of color and shape, each artworkʼs overall balance and unity, and the sitterʼs pose). During the studio component, teachers will learn about Warholʼs photographic silkscreen printing process, and then create their own “pop” portrait in the style of Andy Warhol. Travel to Mattress Factory & Lunch (11:30 AM-12: 30 PM) Afternoon (12:30 to 3:00 PM) The Mattress Factory Participants will study contemporary artistsʼ interpretations of portraiture within the Mattress Factoryʼs current exhibition, Likeness and new permanent installation, It's All About ME Not You, by Greer Lankton. Time will be spent in the MF Studio to explore nontraditional materials to create self-portraits. Sometimes two hours just isn't enough, but a multi-week session is too long. If that is the case, then our extended workshops are for you. You will spend two hours in the hot shop learning how to make a paperweight or flower. Then move to the flame shop where you get to try your hand at making your own bead or pendant. Finally spend two hours in the fusing studio learning how to cut and assemble glass into your own glass tile. Here's your chance to walk across the Bridge of Sighs--without going to jail--and to explore and learn about the architectural significance of two of Pittsburgh's most famous downtown landmarks. Register for the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation's walking tour on Saturday, March 20, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. We'll explore the Allegheny County Courthouse and former Jail (H. H. Richardson, 1884-88) and the City-County Building (designed by Henry Hornbostel, 1915-17). Plus, we'll hear about the green roof planned for the County Office Building Annex. The County of Allegheny and City of Pittsburgh are giving PHLF members and friends access to some places rarely seen by the public. We'll tour the restored Courtroom 321, walk across the Bridge of Sighs, and tour the Jail Museum and former Warden's house.
