Mission/Vision/Goals
SCC presents the work of non-mainstream, cross-cultural, national and international artists working in diverse materials, techniques and art forms. Education is an essential component to SCC programming and advances our mission, to engage the public in the creative process through contemporary craft. SCC was founded by Elizabeth R. Raphael in 1971 as the Store for Arts and Crafts and People Made Things in Verona, PA. It was Raphael’s goal to present contemporary artists and their work to a wider public, and she transformed her vision into one of a rare handful of institutions in the United States dedicated exclusively to craft. In 1986, with its move to Pittsburgh’s Strip District, the organization adopted the name, Society for Contemporary Craft. Since then, SCC has organized over 200 exhibitions. The Studio offers craft classes by nationally recognized teaching artists as well as outreach programs to the Western Pennsylvania Community.
