Mission/Vision/Goals
The mission of the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera is the 'celebration of musical theater." The Pittsburgh CLO is a not-for-profit cultural organization dedicated to the preservation, creation and promotion of the American musical theater art form, the furnishing of arts education and the provision of outreach and meaningful community service opportunities in Western Pennsylvania and throughout the United States. Offerings include: Performances for Students Outside of School, Performances for Students in School, Artists-in-Residence, Classroom Presentations and After School Programs. Offerings
At the CLO, learning takes many forms. The CLO Academy of Musical Theater offers a range of professional classes, workshops and Summer Camps, along with the New Horizons program for students with physical or developmental disabilities and children in the Autism Spectrum. The traveling Gallery of Heroes program takes educational musicals into schools, and Creative Vision partners CLO teachers with local schools to build self-confidence, self-expression and positive behavior among elementary and middle school students.
Arts education is also about giving talented young performers a place on the stage. Upper level students audition to become CLO Mini Stars and perform professional, live shows around the region. All Academy students have the exclusive opportunity to audition and possibly perform on the Benedum Center stage during the CLO Summer Season and at the Byham Theater in A Musical Christmas Carol. The CLO Summer Internship Program provides hands-on experience in arts production and administration during the Summer Season, and the Gene Kelly Awards for Excellence in High School Musical Theater recognizes outstanding the musical theater accomplishments of local schools.
